Aimee Brill has decided to pursue her work in international and community-based maternal health through her organization Village Birth International, and will no longer be a part of the DTI leadership. She leaves behind a legacy of social justice and advocacy that will continue to be at the core of what we do. Growth is a journey of change, marked by both comings and goings. We are eager to see where Aimee’s path leads her and excited to see the ways in which our community will unite and evolve in her absence.
Aimee joined DTI’s leadership in 2012, taking her place alongside longtime friends and collaborators Tara Brooke and Gina Giordano. Bringing a unique blend of social justice, a passion for birth, and nongovernmental organization management, Aimee has infused DTI with her spirit and left us all the better for it.
Over the last three and a half years, Aimee has trained dozens of DTI doulas, some of whom have just begun their new careers and others who are now at the helm of thriving businesses.
Aimee’s projects with DTI have included community-based doula trainings in collaboration with Syracuse Healthy Start. This initiative along with our scholarship program work to increase awareness and work collectively toward closing the gaps that disproportionately affect women of color and birth workers of color. We were honored to receive a grant for this project for the past two years, led by Aimee’s vision, initiative, and passion.
Aimee also started a nurse bridge program in partnership with a New York hospital, establishing connection and community between nurses and doulas in support of better birth outcomes for women and families. We hope to continue to draw inspiration from her work, imbuing a passion for communication, equality, and justice in everything that we do.
DTI continues to thrive and grow, re-imagining our organization and affording new opportunities to our tribe of doulas. As our community has grown, so too have our doulas’ practical expertise and capacity for leadership. We look forward to seeing our doulas blossom as trainers, mentors, and experts in our field. We are grateful for all the insight, time, and talent Aimee has shared with us all, and will continue to hold her close in our hearts as we both evolve and grow.
Love,
Tara and Gina
