It’s been a week and a half since we convened 110 birth workers and creators in Austin, Texas, to explore the intersection of social justice, technology and creativity in the birth world.
Here are a few highlights from #bornintothis18
Meeting all of you.
Between the Birth Workers of Color Gathering, our VIP Mastermind and all of the connections made at the conference itself, forging connections with all of you was the highlight of our year. Thank you for showing up, for pursuing leadership and for truly being interested in the development and health of our field. (For those who attended the VIP Mastermind, follow up with the people you met—accountability is everything.)
2.) Our incredible speakers.
We have nothing but thanks to share with our speakers for the resources, insight and forward-thinking approaches they divulged while on their panels. From the day’s beginning conversation between M. Carmen Lane and Dr. Alicia Bonaparte, to the standing ovation Barbara Verneus elicited when she delivered her spoken word piece, “Dope Moms Need Dope Moms,” our inaugural lineup of guests at Born Into This gave us all the space and time to truly question—what are we born into?
3.) The conference’s creative perks.
Leika, our portraits photographer, Lauren Dunkin of Dope Toast and the talented stitchers behind Fort Lonesome made the day so exciting. (By the way—it seems like many of us got a tattoo for the first time, thanks to Dope Toast.) Our conference tees, “Reproductive Justice Doula,” were also a super hit. Stay tuned for their online release!

There is power in doulas coming together. At the conference alone, we raised more than $3800 for Doula Trainings International’s Birth Workers of Color scholarship. Thank you.
